Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived to a musical family 9 August 1993, in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is the daughter and cousin to the singing sensation Dionne. The mother of Whitney Houston and her daughter began singing professionally at the New Hope Baptist Church of Newark in the year Whitney was just fifteen years old. They sang the backing vocals in Chaka Khan's track from 1978 Im Every Woman. Then she went on to sing backing vocals with Jermaine, Lou Rawls, and her mother. Her first gig was as a featured vocalist for the band from New York called Material and it was the excellence of her vocal work with them that attracted the attention of the major record labels, including Arista who signed her in 1983. This is where she would remain for the remainder of her professional career. In 1985, the debut of Whitney Houston became one of the most successful debut albums ever. A number of hit singles, such as Saving All My Love For You How Will I Know You Give Good Love as well as The Most Beautiful Love of All were released from the album, setting her up for a Beatles-beating seven consecutive US number ones. The follow-up album released in 1987 Whitney that included hits The Place Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built on her success but it was her 1992 movie The Bodyguard (1992) that made her one of the best-selling artists ever. Even though the movie and actress' performance were not much praised, her soundtrack album featuring her rendition of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You was the top-selling single and album for several months. It sold more than 44 million copies around the world. The same year, she was married ex-New Edition singer Bobby Brown with whom she has a single daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown in March 1993. The beginning of her addiction to drugs came in the middle of 1993 and at the time of her death in 1996, she'd become a regular user.
